Conservation of mechanical energy is defined as

(a) Energy of motion

(b) Law of conservation of energy

(c) The sum of the kinetic and potential energies of an object remain a constant value unless there are forces acting on the object that cause a loss of energy overall, such a friction and air resistance.

If only internal forces are doing work (no work done by external forces), then there is no change in the total amount of mechanical energy. The total mechanical energy is said to be conserved.
