Simply stated the United States troops were not prepared to fight the Spanish army in the Spanish-American War. They lacked military instruction and strength. The American Navy was not as strong as the Spanish Navy. What they did really have was enthusiasm. The United States Army lacked the proper equipment, the proper military training, and the right officers.
