Question 1:

When an acid name ends in -ic acid, there is often a related acid whose name ends in -ous acid. The formula of the -ous acid has one less oxygen atom than that of the -ic acid. With this information, write formulas for:
(a) sulfurous acid and sulfuric acid

(b) nitrous acid and nitric acid.

Question 2:

Question 1:

(a) Sulfurous acid: H2SO3

Sulfuric acid: H2SO4

(b) Nitrous acid: H2NO2

Nitric acid: H2NO3

Question 2:

To calculate the pH, based on concentration of H+ ions, there is one formula:

ph = - log_(10)(c(h + ))

So the pH of this solution is

- log_(10)( {10}^( - 9) ) = 9

(the solution is basic).
