Before the civil war, Tubman courageously faced danger time and again to guide runaway slaves to freedom. Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland around 1822, Tubman yearned for freedom. In the year 1849, she ran away, fleeing north to Pennsylvania. Harriet Tubman guided around 70 people to freedom in Canada.
