republic- a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

constitution- a body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is acknowledged to be governed.

democracy- a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

aristocracy- the highest class in certain societies, especially those holding hereditary titles or offices.

patricians- an aristocrat or nobleman.

plebeians- a member of the lower social classes.

magistrates- a civil officer or lay judge who administers the law, especially one who conducts a court that deals with minor offenses and holds preliminary hearings for more serious ones.

senate- the smaller upper assembly in the US Congress, most US states, France, and other countries.

consuls- an official appointed by a government to live in a foreign city and protect and promote the government's citizens and interests there.

assemblies- a group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose.

manumission- release from slavery.
