If you have four quarters, three dimes, two nickels, and two pennies, what fraction of the whole coin collection is in dimes? how is it 3/11

Answer:

4 quarters + 3 dimes + 2 nickels + 2 pennies = 11 coins total

We are interested in finding out how much of the collection is dimes only --> 3 dimes / 11 total = 3/11.
