Which one of the following statements about the endomembrane system is correct?

Most of the phospholipids of the endomembrane system are synthesized in the mitochondria.

The endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the plasma membrane.

Mitochondria function in the modification and sorting of lipids and proteins.

Proteins that will be secreted from the cell are likely to be found in closed spaces bounded by membranes of the endomembrane system.

Ribosomes move lipids and proteins among the different organelles of the endomembrane system.

Answer:

Option (3).

Step-by-step explanation:

Eukaryotes have well defined the cell organelles that are bound by the membrane. Endomembarne system divides the cell organelle into the structural and functional compartment of the cell.

The endomembrane system is important for the protein synthesis, process and transport of the protein. The proteins that are secreted into the cell remain bound to the membrane of the endomembrane system.

Thus, the answer is option (3).

The correct answer is: Proteins that will be secreted from the cell are likely to be found in closed spaces bounded by membranes of the endomembrane system.

The endomembrane system is a group of organelles and their surrounding membranes in eukaryotic cells (prokaryotic cell doesn’t have membrane enveloped organelles) that works together in order to modify, package, and transport lipids and proteins. It includes nucleus with its nuclear envelope, lysosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough), Golgi apparatus but also plasma membrane around the whole cell. The endomembrane system does not include mitochondria, chloroplasts, or peroxisomes.
