Fractions are just a different way of representing divisions, and proof of that, is that the concept of fractions is the same as the concept of division:


(4)/(4) , for example, is a fraction that represents the totality of a shape that has been divided into 4 parts.

This different way of representing divisions allows us to work easily with certain numbers (usually decimals) so that our equations and calculations aren't so confusing as they would be if we used decimals instead of fractions.

Fractions are division problems. The line between the top and bottom numbers is just another way of writing the division symbol. The top number is the number being divided up and we call this the numerator. The bottom number is the number we are dividing by and we call it the denominator.
