A motorboat travels 132 km in 4 hours going upstream. It travels 196 km going downstream in the same amount of time. What is the rate of the boat in still water and what is the rate of the current?

y = speed of the current

x + y = 162/3 = 54 mph

x - y = 132/3 = 44 mph

Add the two equations to get

2x = 98

x = 49 mph
