x + 3y = 5 => x = 5 - 3y

2x - y = -4

Subs x

2.(5 - 3y) - y = -4

10 - 6y - y = -4

10 - 7y = - 4

10 + 4 = 7y

y = 14/7

y = 2

Subs y

2x - y = -4

2x - 2 = -4

2x = -4 + 2

2x = -2

x = -2/2

x = -1

Answer:

y=2

x=-1

Explanation:

2x-y = -4 (1)

x+3y=5 (2)

x-4y=-9 (move the 4 to rhs)

x=4y-9

sub the x equation into (2)

4y-9+3y=5

7y=14

y=2

sub y into equation (1)

2x-2=-4

2x=-2

x=-1
