In 2010, a city population was 55,210 and it was declining at a rate of 1.09 each year. What is the best prediction for when the city population will first be below 48,000?

Answer:

48000=55210(1-0.0109)^t

Solve for t

t=12.77 =13 years

2010+13=2023

So the answer is c

The multiplier would be (1 - 0.0109)

Just use trial and error to work out the number of years:

55,210 x (1 - 0.0109)^9 = 50024.13

55210 x (1 - 0.0109)^12 = 48406.10

55210 x (1 - 0.0109)^15 = 46840.41

As you can see, the third option would be the first time it is below 48000. Therefore, it would be option C
