The area of the grass left will be the area of the total of the background subtract the area of the patio.

The area of the backyard is
(3x+5)(2x-1) = 6x^2 +7x - 5

The area of the patio is
(x+3)(x+3) = x^2 + 6x + 9

Subtract the two areas to have the area of the leftover grass.


6x^2 + 7x - 5 - (x^2 + 6x + 9)\\5x^2 +x - 14
