Respiration is the process by which O2 and CO2 diffuse into the blood and get out of the blood (gas exchange occurs). There are two types of respiration:
1. External respiration - gas exchange between the external environment and the lungs. This is what we call breathing. So the example above is not external respiration.
2. Internal respiration - gas exchange between the cells of the body and the blood
