"President Cleveland, Where Are You?" is a short story written by Robert Cormier and it was published in 1998. Basically, this historical fiction tale narrates the story of Jerry, a small boy who lives during the era of the Panic of 1893, a time of economical strife and lack of job opportunities in the United States. In essence, the story tells of the difficulties that Jerry goes through to be able to earn enough money to get himself some chewing gum but comes accross a problem once he gets the means; his dad´s birthday is coming and his siblings wish to buy him a present. Jerry decides that buying the gum is more important and it is his right, as he earned the money to use as he pleases, and ends up regretting this not only because of the way that his siblings and family now see him, but also because he was unable to buy the gum because the factory had closed. This event, and its consequences, lead the child to reflect upon what he has done and open his eyes to many things around him that he had never noticed before. One is an appreciation of his family over material things. The second, is a comprehension of his brother, Armand, whom he had earstwhile seen as a stranger and finally, it is the value of sharing. After earning some money through the recollection of President Cleveland´s pictures, he gets 5 dollars that he gives to his brother so he can buy a new garment for his girlfriend Sally. Given the theme of the story, it is correct to say that the correct answer here then is: B: Growing up means becoming less selfish.
