Nazim Hirkemat was a Turkish poet who lived in the XX century. He led a life full of oppression since he spent many years in prison for his communist and revolutionary ideas. He went to Russia to study and there, he became a communist. His communist ideas made him be in prison but he never felt miserable; he always fought for his ideals . This is the reason why in the excerpt from his poem " On Living" , Nazim Hirkemat's invites the reader to live for a cause. The point is to be engaged in doing serious things. Living means to be engaged with the present moment: to love and to fight for your ideals. While the poet was in prison, he wrote love poems and poems on other topics.

Nazim Hikmet was a poet that was born in the Ottoman Empire. He studied in the University of Moscow and he worked in many journals and he wrote Communist propaganda activities. Because of that, he was arrested for radical and subversive activities.

He moved to the Soviet Union and continued to work for the Communist ideal.

His life story shows why he sustains a person should be only occupied with living. He had a difficult time in jail and he had to focus on survival so he could hang until the end of his prison time.
