2. After a fierce tackle on the line of scrimmage, a football player briefly loses consciousness. When he regains it, the team doctor begins asking him questions. The player knows his name, the date, his team name, and how he got to the game. He also remembers where he lives and events that happened during his childhood. When given a list of seven digits to remember for 15 seconds, he has no trouble doing so. So far, the doctor is relieved. Exerting caution, the doctor tells the player to go sit at the end of the bench. Fifteen minutes later, she approaches him again and says, “Let's run through that battery of memory tests again.” The player replies, “What memory tests? This is the first time I've seen you today, doc.” Which parts of the memory and brain systems are working, and which are not?

The short term memory system is not working properly so anything that happens within a recent amount of time the player will not remember but the long term memory system is working so anything that happened long before the player was injured he will remember.

Answer:

The player has problems in the frontal part of the brain, in the pre-frontal lobe where short-term memories are stored. However, the player presents the maintenance of long-term memories, which means that the hippocampus (brain region) was not affected.

Step-by-step explanation:

As you saw in the question above, the player has no memory loss in information that happened over a long period of time, such as childhood things, his name and what he was doing at the place where he suffered an injury and how he got there . This means that the hippocampus was not harmed by the blow the jagador received. The hippocampus is a region deep in the brain that stores long-term memories.

However, the player showed a deficiency in storing short-term memories, as he did not remember the doctor who attended him, nor the tests he performed the day before. This means that the player has damaged the frontal area of his brain, in the region of the prefrontal lobe where short-term memories are stored.
