If you are talking about the America American colonies, here’s what I know.
The British government set up chapters more or less of government in each of their colonies in the Americas (13 colonies) which were responsible for overseeing trade, the people, etc, and collecting taxes (how Britain profited from the colonies). A legislature was held by land owning men. These things ensured (or at least for a while before we decided to rebel) that England could control the affairs of the colonies even across the Atlantic. Government in the colonies and the presence of soldiers, etc, gave some protection. Overall I’d say it was for things to run smoothly and for England to gain profit off the colonies.
