When a person is in the Absorptive Phase, the gastrointestinal tract is filled up and the liver converts glucose to glycogen and triglyceride. During this process, the anabolic processes are greater than the catabolic process.

During the Post-absorptive phase, otherwise known as fasting period, the body runs on already stored glycogen to function. This process usually occurs overnight when humans are in a sleep state, but extending this fasting state during the day also helps to maintain the cells and tissues.
