Explanation:

If r is the radius of a circle, the area of the circle is A = (pi)r^2.

If d is given, we find the radius by taking half of the diameter: r = d/2.

Here the diameter is 18 mm, and so the radius, r, is 9 mm.

The area of the dime is A = 3.14(9 mm)^2 = 3.14(81) mm^2 or 294.34 mm^2
