It allows the reader to visualize the authors story as if it were a picture or movie. Imagery is using the 5 senses (taste ,touch ,hear ,smell , & sight) to give the audience a vivid picture of the story they are reading.

This was a very good call and the use of figurative language and imagery worked to accomplish his objective at the time. even though after researching people gathered the information from the real-life version of the characters their story to contrast it with the poem.
