Why did Thomas Jefferson leave office?

Well, optimists would say because of Washington's example of two-terms but the real answer is Thomas Jefferson's presidency was in shambles by the end.

His VP had been tried for murder, there was the whole Chesapeake embargo, and the possibly illegal acquisition of the Louisiana territory.

All in all, Jefferson slinked away from the Presidency.
