you have to break it up into the individual shapes, being two triangles and two rectangles. the area of the side triangle is
4*12=48ft^(2). then there is the triangle on the left, which the area is
(9*40)/2=180. then you have one rectangle, and one triangle left. you know the rectangle has to be
19*12=228 because four has to be subtracted from one side for the rectangle next to it. the final triangle has a base of 19, like the previous rectangle, and a height of 28 from
40-12=28 because its height doesnt run into the previous rectangle. this means the area is
(28*19)/2=266. once you add them all,
228+266+180+48=722
