I have 36 coins with a total value of $2.35. The coins are 5-cent and 10-cent coins. How many 5-cent coins do I have?

25 nickels, 11 dimes

Explanation:

let n (nickel) = amount of 5 cent

let d (dime) = amount of 10 cent

5n+10d=235

n+d=36

substitute this in the first equation

5n+10(36-n)=235

5n+360-10n=235

-5n+360=235

-360 -360

-5n=-125

/-5 /-5

n=25

you have 25 nickels

if you have 36 total coins, subtract 25 from this and get 11
