Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer:

5-1/4 (i.e. 5 + 1/4)

Discussion:

-8 ( 0.5y - 3 ) = 3 => divide both sides by -8

0.5y - 3 = (-1/8)*3 => add 3 to both sides

0.5y = 3 - 3/8 => 3 - 3/8 = 24/8 - 3/8 = 21/8

0.5y = 21/8 => multiply both sides by 2

2 (0.5)y = 2 * 21/8 => as 2*(0.5) = 2 (1/2) = 1

y = 42/8 =>

y = 40/8 + 2/8 = 5 + 1/4

y = 5-1/4

Thank you,

MrB
