The teacher went around the room asking each student to say his or her name and their favorite game I started to feel very nervous. Finally it was my turn. I opened my mouth to speak but my mouths was a sandy desert.

What two things does the metaphor compare?

What does it mean?

This metaphor compares their mouth to a desert. This means that either his mouth was too dry to say anything, or that no words would come out of his mouth just as their is not much in a sandy desert.
