The tone of a text expresses the author's...attitude toward a subject, a character or person, or an audience
The author uses his words and style to show his / her attitude. In the attitude goes his / her feelings. The tone can be indifferent, neutral, passionate, informative, remorseful, etc. If the text is about love (subject) , the author's words and style will show if he/ she believes in love or is skeptical about it. The author will do the same with a character or a person. His/ her style will show his / her sympathy or his / her indifference towards the person. The author may address an audience and he / she may also sound sympathetic or close to it. However, the author's tone will rarely be indifferent towards the audience.
These options are not correct:
- reason for writing a work of literature . The tone has to do with the writer's feelings. He / she gives his / her opinion about the subject or any other element of a story. The author is not rational through tone.
- love and human emotions . Tone is related to emotions but not necessarily to love.
-argument and how he/she appeals to the audience. Tone has to do with emotions not with argumentations. The author appeals to the audience directly or indirectly, this will depend on the type of literature work. If the tone only referred to argumentation and how the author appeals to the audience, the text would have to be mainly a political speech.
