How did The Indians get their water

they made channels from rivers to their village to have accesible water. i dont know if this is correct but my grandfather told me this because we are Navajo indian :)

They found water in rivers or other places & they would boil it so it wouldn’t be much bacteria so they won’t get sick. Idk if this helps but i tried.
