Before 1763, The british government had to suffer the economic consequences of the Seven Years’ that make them trapped in large amount of debt.
So, the parliament decided to imposed taxes to the colonies. This tax was not well received by the colonists since it reduce the income that they can use for their families. This situation is used by Thomas Paine to make the argument that the colonists would be better of if they're separated from the British government. This fueled colonists' desire to join independence movement.
