y = mx + c ( m is the slope and c the y- intercept )

y = 4x - 1 is in this form with m = 4

• Parallel lines have equal slopes, hence

y = 4x + c ← is the partial equation

To find c substitute (- 3, 5) into the partial equation

5 = - 12 + c ⇒ c = 5 + 12 = 17

y = 4x + 17 ← equation of parallel line
