Now, some examples of material that ISN’T protected is obscene material such as, copyrighted material, defamation which is libel (written) and slander (spoken), and REAL threats. An easy example is New York Times Co v. Sullivan. The statement from the New York Times that was under question, knew that the statement was false and they acted in reckless disregard of its truth. This is a landmark because now the media MUST think that the statement is true and think through each article that they post.
