When filing a case in federal court, the plaintiff (the person bringing the case) needs to show that he or she will be directly affected by the outcome of a case

This is correct and is known as standing.

Standing refers to one's ability to be a part of a lawsuit. In essence, you cannot file lawsuits on matters that don't affect you.
