All ferromagnetic minerals with in the earth crust align themselves along the spilled hot magma thereby reversing its north-to-south polarity very frequently. As the magma cools down the polarity gets constant and confined. Later on when the magnetic field flips again, new ocean floor again aligns its polarity in opposite direction.
