Answer:

In the story, The Cone by H. G. Wells, Mrs. Horrocks and Mr. Raut both have similar attitudes towards the ironworks company. However, Mr. Horrocks' point of view is quite different from the other two. According to the text, it states, " “This country was all fresh and beautiful once,” he said; “and now — it is Gehenna Down that way — nothing but pot-banks and chimneys belching fire and dust into the face of heaven... But what does it matter? An end comes, an end to all this cruelty... To-morrow.” He spoke the last word in a whisper. “To-morrow,” she said, speaking in a whisper too, and still staring out of the window." This tells the readers that both Mr. Raut and Mrs. Horrocks despised what the ironworks company had done to a place where fresh air and nature used to surround the area, now a place filled with smoke, fire, and dust.

Mr. Horrocks' point of view is quite the opposite from Mr. Raut and Mrs. Horrocks. Based on what I read, " “Have you been telling Mr. Raut of all these contrasts of flame and shadow you think so splendid?” said the woman, turning now to her husband for the first time, her confidence creeping back again, her voice just one half-note too high." This tells the readers that Mr. Horrock sees beauty in the iron works company. He also believes that the company was a work of art. This reveals that Mr. Horrocks is utterly in awe of the machinery and the destruction of nature itself.

In conclusion, both Mr. Raut and Mrs. Horrocks thought negatively of how their surroundings were being abused and neglected. They could not bear to see the world being burned with fire and smoke filling up the air with nothing fresh left to breathe in. Mr. Horrocks, on the other hand, adores the flame and destruction. He sees it as a work of art.

In The Cone by H. G. Wells, the three characters have different points of view towards the ironwork company. In fact, Mrs. Horrocks and Raut have similar ideas. They both think negatively about it. Mrs Horrock thinks it is a sofficating place which lacks of love and beauty. It reveals her need of being loved. For Raut the company is something ugly among the beauty of the countryside. This reveals his love for nature and art. Mr. Horrock is the only one who sees beauty in the company. He believes it is a work of art. This reveals his attachment to material things.
