Explanation:

13. In the figure we have two right angled triangles by using Pythagoras theorem in each triangle

∴ y =
\sqrt{30^(2)-18^(2)}=24

∴ x =
\sqrt{10^(2)+24^(2)}=26

∴ x + y = 26 + 24 = 50

14. In any triangle the sum of the smallest 2 sides must greater than the

third side

∵ If the lengths of the 3 sides are 7 , 16 and 9

∴ 7 + 9 = 16 and the length of the third side = 16

∴ 9 can not be the third side
