How did the climate and terrain that made a good Rome a good site for a city on the Italian peninsula?

The Italian peninsula had hill like mountains which allowed the Roman city-states to build roads and stay connected, it was also in the middle of the Mediterranean sea so traders stopped on the peninsula.
