Traditions were passed down in a variety of ways. They were communicated from elders to parents and from parents to children. Also, many societies had elders of storytellers known as griots who conveyed stories and traditions in free and fixed text. Traditions were also embodied in the cultural practices of many societies.

In West Africa, a griot is a praise singer or poet who possesses a repository of oral tradition passed down from generation to generation. ... Music is often used in different African cultures to ward off evil spirits and to pay respects to good spirits, the dead and ancestors.(hope this helped)
