Please help explain...

Use the remainder theorem to find the remainder resulting from the division:


(x^2 + 5x - 1) ÷ (x - 1)

The remainder theorem says that dividing a polynomial
p(x) by
x-c leaves a remainder equal to
p(c).

Here we have
p(x)=x^2+5x-1 and
c=1. So the remainder would be


p(1)=1^2+5(1)-1=5
