The scandal that undermined public trust in President Richard Nixon was the Watergate Scandal.

The name Watergate comes from the break-in by men at the Democratic National Committee that was established at the headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington DC.

The Scandal consisted of many clandestine illegal activities that were taken by members of the Nixon administration, those activities aimed political opponents of Nixon and everyone that the then-President believed to be suspicious.

The President also had a tape-recording system in his offices, many tapes of his conversations were recorded and later released.

Nixon faced impeachment, even Republicans would vote in favor of the motion, he did not have another alternative than resign.

General Ford succeeded Nixon and pardoned him ensuring that he would not face criminal prosecution. But his reputation was damaged by the American people. 69 government officials were charged 48 were found guilty. The Watergate Scandal is until now an example of ethical and legal implication of the President’s actions.
