To add fractions, the fractions must have a common (same) denominator. If the fractions don’t, you first convert them and then add them. Josie, however, just added the fractions without converting them first.

Answer:

Jossie's answer makes no sense because he took the numerators and denominators and added them directly.

That is not the correct way to add fractions.

Explanation:

Jossie's answer makes no sense because he took the numerators and denominators and added them directly.

That is not the correct way to add fractions.

First if you have different denominators you should multiply them between them to obtain a common denominator.

Then you should find the quotient between the common denominator and each denominator of each fraction, then multiply this number by the numerator of each respective fraction, and finally add up numerators.

(1)/(5)+(1)/(2)=(2+5)/(10)\\\\(1)/(5)+(1)/(2)=(7)/(10)

The correct answer is
(7)/(10).
