Both are correct because The math just works out. A simpler example is 3+4=7. 7 Is the total and taking one of the parts, 3 or 4, would leave you with the other one. 7-4=3 is true like 7-3=4 and 3+4=7.

By that logic, in the equation 44-X=7, we can switch the place of the X and 7 leaving us still, with a true statement.
