How did Reconstruction affect race relations in the United States?

Reconstruction marked a period of enormous set back for race relations in the United States.

In essence, with Reconstruction, the formerly treasonous Southern States were given back the keys to the Kingdom and allowed to create laws that openly discriminated against their former slaves.
