Many of the people affected by the tsunami were poor. Why might earthquakes be more damaging in poor areas of the world?

\boxed{No \ preparation, \ no \ knowledge, \ none \ of \ the \ proper \ supplies \ / \ tools.}

[|] Explanation [|]

There are many reasons people living in poor or unsuitable areas might have been affected. One reason might have been Not enough money to buy or make the repairs to protect themselves from the Tsunami.

If they are already living in a poor area, then it would make sense they would have no money to move or make the proper adjustments to their homes.

They also might not know how to fix their house. This is probably very unlikely, but you never know. It is a possibility, that they don't know how to stay safe and tied down.
