Neurotransmitters are synthesized in the pre-synaptic neuron terminal buttons to allow for the transmission of an action potential across the synaptic gap to the post-synaptic neuron. They are released through exocytosis from the pre-synaptic neuron and cause messages to be transmitted between neurons which are obtain by the various types of sensory receptors within the body.
