In approximately 29,000 pea plants, Gregor Mendel carried out hybridization experiments. Peas were an ideal choice for use by Mendel because there were seven features that could be easily observed. He started his two - condition experiments on peas.

Mendel chose pea plants because they had easily observable traits that he could manipulate.

The plants also are able to self-fertilize and therefore the plants would remain genetically pure. Therefore, Mendel would be able to easily get pure lines of several generations.
Experimental cross pollination is also easily achievable in a pea plant.

I hope this helps °^°
