Explanation:

(x+7) - (3x+4)

Since there is a negative outside the 3x + 4, multiply both numbers by -1. Afterwards, you can't combine anything in the parentheses, so just ignore them.

New expression set up:

x + 7 - 3x - 4

Combine like terms:

x - 3x = -2x

7 - 4 = 3

Answer:

-2x + 3
