The ASL sign is identified using three main parameters: hadshape, location, and movement. There are also minimal pairs in the ASL sign, which differ in only one element. This difference can be handshape, palm orientation, start or end location, non-manual sign or modifier movement. In ASL the minimum pairs are word pairs that differ in only one prime. Thus, for example, the signs for "good" and "bad" differ only in one palm position.
