Explanation:

Looking at the figure, you can see 6 cubes facing you, so two rows of three cubes or three columns of two cubes - either way 3 x 2 = 6. Since you can also see the side of the box, you see that there are 6 more cubes behind the first ones, so an additional two rows of three cubes or three columns of two cubes - either way 3 x 2 = 6. So, the total number of cubes is 6 + 6 = 12.

Volume can also be found by multiplying the length x width x height:

3 cubes x 2 cubes x 2 cubes = 12 centimeter cubes
