The student council at Somerville High School is making T-shirts to sell for a fundraiser, at a price of $11 apiece. The costs, meanwhile, are $10 per shirt, plus a setup fee of $48. Selling a certain number of shirts will allow the student council to cover their costs. How many shirts must be sold? What will the costs be?

Answer:

They must sell 48 shirts to cover the cost.

Explanation:

In order to find the break even point, we need to create an equation for the amount of money made. This would be 11 per shirt (x)

p(x) = 11x

Now we also have to create an equation for the cost relative to the number of shirts, but also adding the setup cost.

c(x) = 10x + 48

Now to find when they are equal, set the two equations equal to one another and solve for x.

11x = 10x + 48

x = 48
