The control rods are lowered after a certain stage in a nuclear reactor, to absorb the neutrons , which reduces the number of reactions taking place in the reactor. As the number of reactions gets reduced, less amount of heat energy is produced and in case is the entire control rod is inserted in the core of reactor, the reactor completely shuts down
