Answer: The correct answer is: The cultural revolution was a socio-political movement initiated by Mao Zedong to reintroduce his thinking and maintain Chinese communism. There was a lot of propaganda in favor of Mao so that people would respect him and adore him, a false image of him was created. During the Cultural Revolution, Mao's personality cult was more intense. Mao's image was of a political genius, a kind and good leader, someone who cares for his people. His achievements were magnified but his flaws and his brutal character were hidden. In this way his power and control over China increased. Personality cults glorify a leader with manipulated information.

The cult of personality of Mao Zedong in China resulted in huge support of the Cultural Revolution. Most of the people in China were just following what Mao propagated, without questioning it, or thinking about its consequences. The reason for that was that Mao gradually became a leader that was considered perfect, divine even, and that was due to the constant propaganda by the Communist Party which brainwashed the people. The situation was in many ways similar to what is happening in North Korea in the past few decades.

The Cultural Revolution's purpose was that Mao manages to strengthen his position, status, and support in the country even more, and so it did, as his popularity until his death was at an incredibly high level in China.
